Instructions and Recommendations
Why test for nitrate?
Within your aquarium, fish waste together with uneaten food and dead fish or plants are decomposed in a process known as the Nitrogen Cycle. This cycle involves the decomposition of fish waste etc. from ammonia, ammonia into nitrite, and nitrite into nitrate.
Ammonia, nitrite and to a lesser extent nitrate are harmful to the fish in your aquarium, but should not reach dangerous levels if you have a suitable biological filter.
Nitrate is continually produced by an established, fully functioning biological filter. In the aquarium nitrates are consumed by plants and algae as a source food. If too few plants are present the aquarium is overstocked or the fish are over fed the nitrate levels can rise.
Nitrate levels greater than 50mg per litre of water can be harmful to your fish and encourage unsightly algae growth.
In marine tanks nitrate should be kept as low as possible (preferably below 12.5mg/l or lower when keeping invertebrates).
Therefore it is important to test the level of your nitrate regularly, to ensure optimum water quality, weekly testing is recommended.
